Hi, I’m Megan. A San Francisco transplant, I now live in New York City with my two boys. Living in a small NYC apartment, we look outside the home for adventure. You’ll often find us at the local climbing gym or exploring the different boroughs, because in a city like this, you don’t have to go far to find something worth discovering. On school breaks, we take our explorations further afield, looking for adventures in other regions and countries.
I fell into travel when my family moved to Germany when I was a kid, and I spent my teenage and young adult years wandering through Europe. I’d pick a final destination, but leave room to veer off my path when something unexpected caught my interest. That’s still my favorite way to travel.
Our go to is to rent a car and then set our own pace. To a lot of people, that may be interpreted as going slow, but we like to pack in full days, seeing as much as we can while keeping our schedule flexible so that we can go where our whims take us or bypass or speed through things that don’t live up to our expectations.
We don’t like sitting still. Spelunking through lava tubes, traipsing across the countryside, or leaping off of waterfalls are all fair game. But as a trained archaeologist, I’m equally at home in a museum or historic site. And we’re always up for trying local foods, especially the sweets.
This blog started as a field journal — a way to track our adventures, big and small, and local and international. Written for us, I decided to share it in case it’s useful for other families looking to explore some of our favorite places.
If something here helps you plan a trip, push your kids a little further than they feel comfortable, or just convinces you to do the thing you’ve been putting off — that’s enough.
Welcome.
— Megan
